There’s a variety of melon that exists which can withstand the passage of time and the harsh environmental effects much better than other varieties. Whilst all others grew soggy and disintegrated, there was something special about this variety that prolonged its lifespan and kept it fresher for longer.

Further studies revealed that the secret to muskmelon (Cucumis melo), also known as cantaloupe, was an enzyme called Superoxide Dismutate or SOD for short. This is an enzyme that’s found in all living cells and which is used to speed up certain chemical reactions in the body. It works by helping to break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in the cells, thereby helping prevent damage to tissues. Studies have demonstrated that SOD can play a critical role in reducing many symptoms in the body, including internal inflammation and lessening pain associated with conditions such as arthritis. It is believed that levels of SOD in the body decreases with age which is why heart disease, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases become more prevalent.

So will eating more cantaloupe help keep me healthy?

Unfortunately not. Even though cantaloupe contains high levels of SOD, this is deactivated after consumption when it reaches the hard acids and enzymes in the stomach. Even though eating this type of melon has many benefits (it is low in calories and is a great source of vitamin A), it cannot pass on its SOD benefits.

How can I get SOD benefits to stay healthy inside and out?

As we mentioned above, eating naturally-occurring SOD in melons won’t help. Until recently, SOD would have to be injected into the body to feel any benefits but now scientists have managed to create bioavailable forms of Superoxide dismutase using natural melon extracts combined with a natural protective substance so it can pass through the stomach and be absorbed through the intestines into the bloodstream. Once in the blood, SOD can do what it’s meant to do – neutralising potentially harmful substances and reducing oxidative stress.

The VitaDSO range

The VitaDSO range consists of 7 different supplements. Each one contains Superoxide Dismutase and each one is targeted to help maintain health in a specific part of the body. For example, all of them help to reduce oxidative stress in the body and by combining them with other vitamins and minerals, can help target support for other organs and areas of the body, including joints, heart and the immune system.
