Boost your immune system and stave off colds and flu with our turmeric and ginger tonic recipe. It’s powerful stuff and packed full of ingredients which have been used for centuries to heal illnesses.

To start, let’s go through all the ingredients in our immune-boosting recipe to find out why we’ve included them and how they benefit you:

Turmeric = contains an active compound called curcumin which makes it one of the most powerful herbs around. There are over 6,000 articles discussing the health benefits of turmeric alone. The root, when peeled, is a dark orange colour which was also once used as a dye. It’s often considered to be as powerful as some modern medicines but without any of the side effects, used as an anti-coagulant, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory and joint pain management.

Ginger = contains anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols which make it effective in helping alleviate join pain. In addition, it can help boost your immune system, as well as promoting healthy sweating which is useful if you’re suffering from a cold. The good news is that you don’t need too much either as it is so potent.

Lemon = if you also have a sore throat then lemons can help fight infection as it has anti-bacterial properties. It also helps to balance the heat from the ginger.

Nutmeg = not only does nutmeg add spice and flavour to the tonic but it’s also used to help calm the body as it is rich in magnesium; this can help increase levels of serotonin released which is the hormone responsible for helping you feel relaxed and calm.

Honey = honey is used to make the tonic more palatable but it can also be a good way of boosting your hayfever resilience naturally, especially if you use local honey.

Black Pepper = we use black pepper in this recipe as it increases the bioavailability of turmeric, due to its key chemical, piperine.
